Look Both Ways

(A Cautionary Tale)

This is a good story to impress upon young kids the importance of crossing streets safely.  I think it's perfect that the tale features an athletic little squirrel...I don't think any of us could stand to see many other animals scurrying dangerously between car bumpers!  I read this very dramatically to my kids with long pauses to let the seriousness soak in.  The text is simple and short and the images are very telling.  It's a nice visual for kids too young to really imagine on their own how cars and little people could get all mixed up with each other and who would win if that happened in real life.  The most touching page for me is the tight embrace between squirrel and his mother, a single tear welled up in Filbert the squirrel's eye.  A gentle, memorable reminder that car safety is serious business!

I Love You So...

This book is another great tool to help parents articulate and explain unconditional love.  It does an excellent job of describing just how, well, indescribable!, a parent's love is for their child.   It really isn't enough for a kid to know your love is huge; they want to know "...HOW did it start?  WHERE did love come from to be in your heart?" and "Do you love me EVERY day?  Or does love go UP 'N DOWN like a teetering see-saw?"   I Love You So... offers some fun and understandable answers to these questions, reassuring young readers that even when they break the rules and when they're unkind "My 'love you' doesn't change like the temper of the days.  It's a CERTAIN kind of thing in many DIFFERENT ways."

This is a great read for parents and young children and a message that kids need to hear over and over and over again!

Charlie and Lola

These books were recommended to me over a year ago and we are still checking new ones out from our library and laughing at the funny text and stories!

Brother and sister team Charlie and Lola are a hilarious duo that are not to be missed on your list of picture book must-reads!

The titles are a great window into the unique and entertaining nature of these books:

I Absolutely Must Do Coloring Now Or Painting Or Drawing

I Can Do Anything That's Everything All On My Own

I Really Absolutely Must Have Glasses

And as a really extremely fun bonus, you can look up Charlie & Lola on YouTube and the books come to life...

I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato:

(You find out they have accents! When my boys heard "tomahto" they fell off their chairs from laughter!!)

Harry the Dirty Dog

This book also came up in the comments several posts ago and it is one my boys received from a good friend when they were born.  (One of several classics she gifted them, writing a sweet message to them in each one.  I just love books as gifts!)

This is the story of Harry, a dog with many tricks who hates his bath. He hates it so much that he buries his scrub brush in the yard and runs away! He gets so dirty on his romp about the town that he turns from a white dog with black spots into a black dog with white spots. When he goes home, his family doesn't recognize him!

Of all things, he has to ask for a bath!

I love reading this story with preschoolers because they just love knowing that the dog is really Harry when the family hasn't yet figured it out.  This is a fun family book; a timeless classic.  Timeless, indeed...it was first published in 1956!

Have any of you read Harry by the Sea?  We haven't read it but I'm adding it to our library list!

Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad

This is a fantastic story about young friendship and the difficult task of learning to empathize with other people. Ladybug Girl is thrilled to be having three friends over for a play date and she has their time together all planned out.  When things don't go exactly as she hopes, she has to learn to adjust to other kids having their own opinions too.  My children request this book over and over again and I never mind reading it because the playful illustrations do a wonderful job of inspiring their imaginations and the dialogue between Ladybug Girl and her friends is perfect for starting conversations about friendship dynamics.

Toy Boat

This is a wonderful story about a little boy and the homemade boat he loves.  I love it for the simple fact that kids can identify so well with the main character's strong attachment to a material possession.  What my children covet changes periodically, but there is almost always something that is near and dear to their hearts.

It is with great empathy that they watch and listen to this story unfold, fearful of the little boat's fate once it is separated from its little boy owner.  We found this at our library about two years ago and I think this is one of the first books that really had my children in suspense.  They could read the emotion on all the large boats that are beautifully illustrated and their relief at the reunion of the little boy and his boat was touching.  This is a great book for showing your little ones just how powerful books can be, how they can do more than entertain you...they can move you and touch your heart.  The images in this book are simultaneously soft and powerful and hold the attention of a toddler accustomed to reading as well as they do older children who understand more of the story.

Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You*

It is necessary as a parent to explain to your children the unconditional, ubiquitous and immeasurable love you have for them.  Consistently.  Repeatedly.  They need to hear it, to understand it and to feel it.  As long as I'm still tucking my boys in, we will be reading this book every night.

Here is the beautiful, moving text in its entirety:

I wanted you more
than you ever will know
so I sent love to follow
wherever you go.
It's high as you wish it. It's quick as an elf.
You'll never outgrow it...it stretches itself!

So climb any mountain...
climb up to the sky!
My love will find you.
My love can fly!

Make a big splash!  Go out on a limb!
My love will find you.  My love can swim!

It never gets lost, never fades, never ends...

if you're working...

or playing...

or sitting with friends.

You can dance 'til you're dizzy...

paint 'til you're blue...

There's no place, not one,
that my love can't find you.

And if someday you're lonely,
or someday you're sad,
or you strike out at baseball,
or think you've been bad...

just lift up your face, feel the wind in your hair.
That's me, my sweet baby, my love is right there.

In the green of the grass...in the smell of the sea...
in the clouds floating by...at the top of a tree...
in the sound crickets make at the end of the day...

"You are loved.  You are loved.  You are loved," they all say.

My love is so high, and so wide and
so deep, it's always right there, even
when you're asleep.

So hold your head high
and don't be afraid
to march to the front
of your own parade.

If you're still my small babe
or you're all the way grown,
my promise to you
is you're never alone.

You are my angel, my darling,
my star...and my love will find you,
wherever you are.

You are loved.

~ Nancy Tillman
